The above figures show a 126% increase between 2008 and 2008 and a further 30% increase between 2008 & 2009. The greatest proportionate increase was in the number of Child Packs being distributed, which showed an increase of over 300% between 2007 and 2008 and a further 41% during 2009.
Sadly, the need in our City continues to grow and we expect the need to continue to rise during 2010.

Nature of Need
It is important for The Food Bank to understand the reasons why people need to use our service. The following table shows the breakdown of “Nature of Need” captured via the Food Bank vouchers. As can be seen, Benefit Cuts, Unemployment and Debt account for almost 80% of the reason why people need to use our service. As these three reasons so often follow each other when someone loses their job, it is very likely that the trend will continue over the coming months.

The cost of food items was reviewed on 10th June 2009. It is based on a supermarket “own label” brand (not value brand). This showed that items had gone up by approx 12.5% increasing the cost of a Single Adult Pack to £15.62.
